4th Gen iPhone Cases Appear

Accessory manufacturers are beginning to ramp up production of cases for the iPhone 4G or iPhone HD – we still don’t know! The designs all feature the rounded edges and additional space for the flash that is coupled with the camera. Overall they pretty much match the leaked iPhone prototypes that we’ve seen.

While this isn’t solid evidence that the prototypes we saw are the final design for the iPhone, it shows that manufacturers are confident enough that it will be the final design to go ahead and make cases for it. Either that or it’s the manufacturers looking to jump in ahead of the competition, or maybe they know something we don’t?

Use Your iPhone To Control This Thermostat

In a report published today by PCMag, iPhone users found out there is a new gadget out there meant to improve the comfort in their homes: Nest Learning Thermostat.
The device is programmable by iPhone and looks like an iPod with the well-known click wheel. Understandably, if we think that Nest co-founder is Tony Fandell, one of the lead minds involved in iPod’s creation. Nest Thermostat is a round metal dial with a circular color LCD screen that allows the users to adjust temperature by twisting the wheel or by pressing it like a button. It can be programmed to automatically change the temperature according to a predefined schedule.
But if it is too much bother for the user to adjust the settings all the time, Nest Thermostat is Learning, as its name shows. The device draws its own conclusions from the settings used during a week, tracking all the temperature changes, remembers these settings and automatically does the changes later on.
iphone 4s nest
A special feature allows the users notice if the temperature is in save energy mode, as in this case a green leaf appears on the display. In addition, an Auto-Away setting kicks in prolonged users’ absence and lowers the heating or the cooling. The display shows heating and cooling active with red or blue colours. The installation is supposed to take about 20 minutes by the average user, so no professional help is required.
But, the best feature is Nest Learning Thermostat’s ability to connect to home Wi-Fi network to allow users to program it with their smartphone, tablet or computer.
This new gadget is available next month for the recommended price of $249. Nest site already encourages interested users to pre-order their smart thermostat.

The iPhone 5 Has Already Got Accessories Out On The Market

Nothing has been given more attention lately than the rumors about the eagerly awaited launch of the new iPhone 5. No one knows when exactly it will come out, what it will be called, what its features will be. Actually, no one knows whether it will come out at all.
So far, Apple has been silent and remains to be so. But having no clear information, is not an issue for some companies looking to quickly profit from the rumors. One great such example is the companies which have already started selling accessories for the new phone. Whether just marketing a simple skin, or a docking station, there are some who are hoping that people will take the rumors regarding the iPhone 5’s launch to heart and start getting ready to welcome the new arrival.

Anything new in the accessories department? Something that will make the accessories for the iPhone 5 stand out from the others? Nothing so far. The same skins, same screen protectors, same holsters and docking stations. Yes, the choice of skins is huge. Models vary massively to give customers a great variety according to their personal traits, mood or choice of lifestyle.
Of course, one shouldn’t forget that the skins do not offer any screen cover, so also get a screen protector while you’re at it. No “compatibility” issues there, since most skins go over the screen protector, giving your phone the perfect combination of style and protection.
So if you also believe the rumors and eagerly await the launch of the new iPhone and want to be ready to deck it out right out of the box, now you can. Just go out and choose whichever accessories suit you best.

iPhone To Support Nikon and Canon Photo Lenses

Since its launch, the iPhone has received a whole bunch of extras, attachments and apps to make the users’ experience as varied and enjoyable as possible.
The latest such attachment is something called the iPhone SLR Mount. This will serve as a link between the iPhone and a SLR photo lens. Usability is very simple, as the Mount acts as a case, in which you can slide your phone. You can then attach the actual lens and be on your way.
Let’s not forget however that the photo world is split into two major, rivaling groups. Therefore, in order to accommodate for the photo-fanatic’s own personal taste in camera equipment, the SLR mount comes in two versions, one for Canon lenses and the other for Nikon. This will enable the phone to use basically any Nikon lens, either older or newer, or, if you prefer Canon, you can mount any of your favorite lenses produced since the 1980s. This should cover most users’ preference.
iPhone 5 Nikon Lenses
When designing the Mount, Apple has considered the fact that you, of course, cannot take out the phone’s own lens. Consequently, the mount was built with its own focusing screen of which the phone takes a normal picture (clear and focused, albeit upside down).
The big problem, as with most of Apple’s products is, of course, the price. For the price of one SLR Mount, a photographer, either amateur or professional, could easily just buy lenses for his camera.
Another issue the new Mount might face is the fact that the day-to-day mobile phone users might find carrying a big, uncomfortable photo lens around a bit of a problem. When one bought an iPhone because it is slim and light, it’s hard to believe that they would want to burden themselves with additional equipment which they may or may not use.

Flaunt Your Photos with New iPhone Cases

The standard iPhone casing has a primary purpose of protecting your phone. There are many designs and styles that you can choose from thus you are not only protecting your phone but following the trend as well. Who says you can’t make your iPhone part of your fashion?
There is one type of iPhone case however that stands out among the choices – putting your photos as part of the protective skin. However, this too is divided into two different types namely:
  • Photos that has been embedded in a clear plastic to prevent damage
  • Hard case with photos molded on plastic wrapping from back to sides
The second choice is trendier nowadays because your photos become part of the entire casing and this is from Uncommon.
uncommon-iphone-case
This Uncommon case for iPhone definitely hogs the attention of many consumers. These cases are highly customizable. You choose the specific case and configure the cases on their customizing screen. You will upload your photos with a minimum size of 2000 by 2000 pixels.
Through their customizing screen, you get to adjust, resize and rotate the photo to fit the case in whatever way you want. Uncommon wants to give your iPhone a more personalized touch as you imbed the design and color on the plastic itself to prevent scratching off. With the Uncommon case, you get to choose between the Deflector and the Capsule.
The Capsule case allows you to slide the iPhone into it. It also has an end cap which you can remove if you want to charge the phone. The Deflector on the other hand is more like a “snap on, snap off” design though it is easier to snap on than to get it off the iPhone. This design allows you to get rid of your worries that the iPhone will pop off from the case if you accidentally drop it.
The Uncommon website has user-friendly interface basically because you only have to choose a few models of cases.
If you want to personalize your iPhone further and make your photos your own design for the cases, Uncommon can give you exactly what you need. With it, you design your phone’s casing thus you are in control of what your phone will look like. You can flaunt your photos as you carry your iPhone anytime and anywhere.
Uncommon cases will reflect exactly who you really are. It is trendy, fashionable, personalized and more importantly – it looks more YOU.

Teen Can’t Wait For Apple, Orders White iPhone 4 Direct From Foxconn

It looks like the white iPhone 4 is pretty much dead, with no sign of it coming back. But for 17-year-old Fei Lam, the months of anticipation were too much to wait for Apple’s much-rumored white iPhone 4. , Lam a high school senior from Queens, decided to give the fans what they wanted–and made more than $130,000 in the process!
He used his head and realised there could be good money in this since demand is so strong. He made attempts to skip Apple and directly contacted the company’s supplier, Foxconn.
“I knew a guy from a few years back that had somewhat of a relationship with folks in Foxconn,” Lam, who speaks fluent Chinese, told The Observer.
After he arranged orders for the white iPhone 4 conversion kit and went and created Whiteiphone4now.com and sold the parts for between $135 and $279. Of course the site went viral and Apple aren’t too happy about it.
I got an email from a private investigator accusing me of selling stolen goods, which I’m 100 percent sure is not the case. They are some kind of anti-counterfeit/trademark firm, which sounds ridiculous, similar to what Apple is bringing up to remove White iPhone 4 Listings on eBay. I don’t know how this legal stuff works…
There are a couple of other sellers online and somehow I’m the ‘focus’ of it all. I think this guy is just trying to scare me into stop selling on behalf of Apple.
So if you want to get your hands on a white iPhone 4, even if its not from Apple, check out that site, cause there doesn’t seem to be any sign of it coming from Apple.

The Eco Friendly iPhone 4 Case You’ve Been Waiting For

We have shown off a couple of cases here for the iPhone 4, some that double you’re battery life, some that look like food, and even some that disguise your iPhone as a book, but this is the first one we’ve had that’s eco friendly.
At first glance it looks ok, and from hands on reviews it seems to be made of pretty sturdy stuff. Also that kickstand looks pretty handy. So why is it so eco friendly? Well apparently it’s made from recycled bottles, so that must make it cheaper right? I’m afraid not, it will set you back a steep $39.99, you can take $5 off that if you don’t want the kickstand.
Oh and it only comes in black – you can pick one up from here

Stuff Your iPhone 4 Inside A Canon SLR And See What You Get

Now we’ve had our fair share of outrageous iPhone 4 camera accessories, but here’s a new one for you now. To be honest I don’t see why some many people are intent on turning their iPhone 4′s into SLR cameras, because it’s just not practical.

The latest group of individuals who are having a stab at it are Aniebres, who have actually built something that looks like it could work.
It looks like a sturdy piece of kit, and they’ve dubbed it the iCannon 4 and it all seems to just click together.
Have a look at the video below and see what you think of it

The Not So Pretty iPhone 4 Case With a Dual Sim Adapter

Now we’ve seen our fair share of iPhone 4 cases, so better than others,we’ve had ones that look like food, a book and even diamond encrusted wooden ones, but this one definitely won’t take the prize when it comes to aesthetics. However it does serve a useful purpose that may let you forgive it’s appearances. It does in fact let you use two sim cards with the one iPhone, which you have to admit could be pretty handy.

The dual-sim adapter is part of the case and means you can toggle between them using a menu setting. Unfortunately the adapter doesn’t allow both sims to be used at the same time, but it’s still a clever idea.
The only thing where the really messed up is, they made the case transparent, I mean why would you do that? Now you’re just showing the world that your using two sims, they could have at least blocked that out from view…

But still if it’s what your looking for you can pick one up now for $29 over at USB Fever (whenever they get their servers together that is)

Free iPhone 4 Cases Beginning To Arrive In The US

The free bumpers promised to us by Steve Jobs came with a lengthy waiting list with the earliest orders expected to be shipped in September, however, it seems that some are beginning to arrive a bit earlier than that. The free cases began arriving in the UK last month, but there was no sign of them in the US.
But now several MacWorld contributors have received their cases over the past week with their orders being placed at the end of July just as the free case program began. They were told that shipping dates would be August 27th or later, with the earliest arrival of September 1st. It looks like Apple are moving things on a bit with some of the cases arriving 3-4 weeks earlier than their expected arrival dates.
However they seem to limited to just Apple’s Bumpers and the Clear Incase Snap Cases that are being shipped early. There is no sign of the other models as of yet.
If you haven’t applied for your free case be sure to do so with the Apple iPhone 4 Case Program App which you can download via the app store. The program runs until September 30th and iPhone 4 owners who purchased their device after July 23rd must apply within 30 days of purchase to be eligible. And if you bought before July 23rd, you have until August 22nd to apply

Get Some Tasty iPhone 4 Cases

I’m constantly amazed by some of the iPhone 4 cases that I see these days. But these cases from Strapya really stand out from the crowd.

Yes there are what you think they are, iPhone cases that are made to look like food! Why exactly you would want this is beyond me really, but hey everyone has their own taste (sorry for the dreadful pun)
You can in fact but these, there not once off designs. They’re all $43.20 and will be available soon. You can have Bacon and Eggs, Tonkatsu, Bento, or Yakisoba. You can even get them for the iPhone 3G and 3GS if you wish.
So I guess if you think these are for you, head over to Strapya-World and order yourself one, but it’s not my fault if you get some odd looks from your friends next time you whip out your iPhone.

Bumpers Still Wont Protect Your iPhone 4

As nice as Apple thought they were giving us all free bumpers, they don’t seem to do much good. Yes the may solve Apple’s antenna woes, but that’s about it really. Bumpers may protect the edges of your iPhone 4, but honestly, how many of you actually drop your phone directly on its side?
The majority of falls and drops that a smartphone will experience over its life will be onto its front or back. We’ve already proven that bumpers aren’t much good for protecting that shiny glass casing in the iPhone 4.
Well if your looking for even more evidence that bumpers are pretty useless, Nick Bilton from the New York Times has more proof for you. The image below is what happened to his iPhone 4, complete with bumper after he dropped it onto concrete.

Now luckily for him, this was only a tester unit sent to him by Apple (were still waiting for ours!) and it wasn’t his personal device, so he’s not too tramatised by the whole experience, but it goes to show, Bumpers don’t do a whole lot for protecting your iPhone 4.

Keep Your iPhone 4 Hidden In A Little Black Book

Here’s a slightly unusual iPhone case for you, it’s quite traditional and unusual, and somewhat unpractical.

How about protecting your iPhone 4 in a little black book from bumps, scratches and thieves? This little black book may be what you’re looking for, to give that romantic old fashioned feel to your iPhone 4.
It amazes me though, how manufacturers spend millions trying to design devices as slim and sleek as possible, and then we love to go an bulk them up again with these accessories, it doesn’t really make sense.

I’m sure it does a great job at protecting the iPhone, but I wonder if it solves the antenna issue? And I’m not sure how many iPhone 4 users would want to disguise their handset? Maybe somebody working at Microsoft?
Well if you think it’s for you, go ahead and order one for $40 from Pad and Quill

Best Buy Giving Away Free Invisible Shields For iPhone 4 Customers

Going along with Apple’s scheme of free bumpers and other approved third party cases, it seems Best Buy are now offering free Invisible shields for unhappy iPhone 4 customers.
What’s more it’s for any iPhone 4 owner, apparently you don’t even have had to purchase your iPhone 4 in Best Buy at all!
Now the Invisible Shield only covers the antenna portion of the iPhone 4, and doesn’t do much to protect your device, but it does provide a solution to the antenna issue.
Even better is Best Buy will even install the shield for you, free of charge. Normally these Invisible Shields cost $9.99, but my guess is Best Buy are doing this as a loss leader, to get you into the store in the hopes that you buy some other accessories.

Free iPhone 4 Bumpers Beginning To Arrive

The free bumpers that Apple promised us are now beginning to arrive in the hands of eager customers. They begun shipping at the beginning of the week, but so far the arrivals appear to be limited to UK customers so far.
But i’m sure customers in other countries who’ve received shipping notices, can expect theres to arrive any day now.
From those that have arrived to date, it appears that they come in the standard iPhone Bumper case and packaging. Users who have ordered third party cases however are yet to receive anything, for now it just appears to be Apple’s bumpers.
There is a lengthy delay of nearly a month for most customers, but then again, this could change as many customers received shipping notices of their bumpers earlier this week, when the expected shipping date wasn’t for the next couple of weeks.

iPhone Bumper Program May Cost $175 Million

Apple finally coped on and released that the safest (and cheapest) option would be to give away the iPhone 4 bumper cases or other 3rd party cases. Now obviously this will come with it’s costs and Apple has reportedly put aside $175 Million of it’s revenue to cover the costs.
According to Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer $175 million of iPhone 4 revenue is being put aside to cover their costs. This means that revenue generated from iPhone 4′s sold from now until September will be used to cover the costs of providing the free bumpers and cases.
While $175 million may sound like a lot, it’s nowhere near as much as what a product recall would have cost them. It was estimated a product recall could cost as much as $1.5 Billion, had Apple gone ahead with it.

Apple Beginning To Give Refunds For Purchased Bumpers

I’m sure you’re all well aware by now that Apple is giving away free bumpers now with each iPhone 4. Of course they’re also giving a full refund to those who have already purchased the bumpers and it seems like that process is beginning now.
Users on Macrumors have reported that their bumper cases are now being refunded to them

This only seems to be applying to online purchases as well as back orders for them. I expect the process will continue over the next few days. Apple will more than likely provide a method for those in store-purchases, but we’ve yet to hear anything on that

How About A Diamond Encrusted Wooden iPhone?

Many of you seemed to like our Diamond iPhone 4, so now I’ve got a new variety for you. How about a 18-karat Apple Logo embedded in a 200 year old sheet of African Blackwood embedded with Swarovski crystals?
Sounds nice doesn’t it, it looks it too….
Of course you’re probably wondering who would buy this, but you have to admit it would be pretty cool to show off to your friends.
The price for all this luxury? It’s not too bad actually, it’s a bargain at $3,500 for the Swarovski crystals or $3,000 for the manlier version on the right with no crystals.
I’m afraid you can’t get your hands on one right now (I know you have your credit card out) you’ll have to wait until December. But fear not, the iPhone 3GS is also available in this finish as of July – for the same price.
So if any of you are wondering what to get me for Christmas, this is a hint.
You can make advanced orders here if your so inclined

Fix Your iPhone Antenna Issues With A Band-Aid

While Apple may have finally grown up and realised that they needed to do something about the antenna issue on the iPhone 4 and given us free bumpers. It’s not really the solution we all hoped for, I mean what’s the point in buying a phone that doesn’t work as is. You should be able to buy a phone and not have to add an accessory to it just to make phone calls.
Adding the bumper to the iPhone is like giving it a full body cast, when only it’s ankle is broken. The only bit of the iPhone 4 that needs to be insulated by the bumper is the lower left side where the antenna mark is, so in theory you would only need a small piece of material here, something like……a band-aid!

These colorful little things will make your iPhone all better, and you will still be able to retain your sleek iPhone design, apart from the little bit with the band-aid.
You can get a pack of these antenna-aids for just $5. You never know, some people may prefer these to bumpers, heck we could have a new fashion trend on our hands!

iPhone SLR Camera Mount And Video

Earlier this month we set out eyes on the first iPhone 4 SLR camera mount for those hardcore photography geeks who can’t bare to part with their iPhone. To be honest it wasn’t really much of a stunner, but now there’s a new one on the market.
Ok it’s not much of a looker either, but it’s more compact and slightly more user friendly. It weighs 1.1lb and is made from aluminum and you can add a Canon EF Lens to it.
So is it really worth lugging around this rather odd looking contraption for your iPhone 4, or is the standard HD Video capture enough for you?
Have a look at the video below and decide for yourself

Bumpers Provide Little Protection For iPhone 4

Along with the iPhone 4, for the first time Apple announced their very own iPhone 4 cases, dubbed “bumpers”. While these bumper cases have been known to solve the iPhone 4 antenna issue but how good are they at protecting your beloved iPhone 4 from destruction?
iFixYouri decide to find out for us, they’ve already showed us that you will smash the screen after 3 drops without the bumper case, so what is it like with one?
I bet your were wincing as you watched that!
It turns out that after just 3 drops from standing height onto a concrete path, the iPhone 4 glass screen will crack. Just as it did in the original test with no bumper
So it seems those bumpers are pretty useless for any major falls, maybe they should try this test out on some other better cases

Add A Professional SLR Lens To Your iPhone 4 Camera

Sure the camera on the iPhone 4 is a much bigger improvement on what was previously available. It now sports a 5 megapixel camera with a LED Flash, HD Video Recording and 5 x digital zoom. But for you serious photographers, this is probably nowhere near good enough for you.
Well how about adding an SLR Lens to the mix to improve things a bit?

Yup this odd looking contraption actually lets you attach a full sized SLR to your iPhone 4 camera.
While exact details are scare at the moment, we’re pretty certain it is in fact real, but we’ve no word on pricing, or availability.
To be honest it wouldn’t be my cup of tea, what about you guys?

Apple Enables Nitro JavaScript Speed for iOS 5

iOS users have undoubtedly noticed that JavaScript web apps run faster on Safari than on the home screen. Apple has decided to solve this issue by improving JavaScript performance for the apps which have been saved on the home screen in its upcoming iOS 5.
The Cupertino-based company enabled the Nitro JavaScript engine for Safari in iOS 4.3. The engine converts the interpreted JavaScript code into a native ARM code. Normally the native code is on a writeable memory, but the engine changes it into executable. Thanks to this process, the iOS is capable to run apps up to 2.5 faster.
The improvement was only valid for web based apps since they run on Java Script, but home apps saved to the home screen run in a different process (Web.app) that is incompatible with Nitro engine. Usually, an app cannot make a writeable page executable if the app has not been signed by the developer and checked by Apple.

But the company has allowed Mobile Safari to generate code in a dynamic manner within protected memory and commands the CPU to execute that code. The problem is that web.app is not allowed to generate code in iOS 4.3 and above.
However, Apple has permitted Web.app to do exactly that in iOS 5 which means web-based apps stored to the home screen will run just as fast as those on Safari.
But there is a catch: apps loading webpages in the WebKit view cannot access the engine because Apple wants to avoid dynamic code injection in third-party apps. The company can control the code from Mobile Safari and Web.app and issue security updates to counter threats, but it cannot do the same for third-party apps.

8 Features Apple Has Borrowed for iOS 5

iOS 5 could remain in history as the operating system whose most features have been inspired by other developers. Apple has taken a peak into the jailbreakers’ garden and “borrowed” the most popular features available so as to embed them in its iOS.
The company now offers many features that usually would have been available on jailbroken iPhones only. Users must certainly be happy since they can now save the money they would have paid for the respective Cydia apps.
Here are some of the most important features Apple has taken from others:
  • 1. The Notifications Center is strikingly similar to Peter Hajas’ MobileNotifier and with Android’s notification system. Hajas has recently been hired by Apple, by the way.
  • 2. Wi-Fi Sync – the feature was available via a homonym app from Cydia. Apparently, Apple rejected the app just in 2010.
  • 3. Lockscreen notifications are similar to LockInfo or Smartscreen, two tweaks that have been available in Cydia for a long time.
  • 4. Video Out became available only in iOS 4.3. Apple offered users the change to perform video mirroring on their gadgets’ displays, but Cydia had offered apps such as DisplayOut long before.
  • iOS stolen features
  • 5. The option to take photos using the volume control buttons. Snappy is one of the first tweaks that offered this function and Apple realized its importance, therefore decided to integrate the feature in its iOS.
  • 6. Personal HotSpot –The MyWi app became almost useless after Apple launched the Personal HotSpot feature in its iOS 4.3 which enabled users to turn their iPhones into Wi-Fi HotSpots. MyWi is still a popular app because it lets iPad owners use their tablet as a HotSpot. Apple still has not enabled the Personal HotSpot feature for the iPad.
  • 7. FaceTime over 3G – many tweaks enabling FaceTime video calls over 3G became available last year and recent rumors suggest Apple is planning to turn FaceTime into a native iOS feature.
  • 8. Apps – before the AppStore, there was Installer and other such centers that let users run third-party apps.
The good news is that Apple has taken these concepts and improved them to a certain extent. The bad news is the company has not offered anything to the real developers.
The list can go on and on, but I think we all got the point: many iOS 5 features have not been developed in Apple’s backyard; the tech giant has rather borrowed them from its neighbors’ gardens.

iPhone 5 To Bring Panoramic Photo Capabilities, Thanks to iOS 5

Apple’s fifth-generation smartphone could offer users panoramic photo capabilities if we were to believe an iOS 5 code section. iOS 5 is very likely to be the operating system running on iPhone 5, expected to be launched in four months’ time. Apple has already introduced its upcoming iOS at WWDC and let the company’s fans take a glimpse at the new offer. iPhone 5 will definitely be a hit since iOS 5 alone can turn it into a super smartphone.
The iPhone 5 is likely to bring an 8MP main camera which could record 1080p Full HD videos; this information is almost one hundred percent certain. A recent discovery made while curious people were looking through the codes of iOS 5 suggests that the camera could also shoot panoramic stills, 9To5 Mac informed.
iPhone 5 Panorama
However, the code does not reveal how the method works, thefore we can only make assumptions. Users may only need to move the camera sideways over a landscape and the iPhone binds the images together so as to create a continuous image. Panoramic still may be generated by stitching photos together or by creating a movie.
The idea is not new, since other non-iOS smartphones offer this feature. This would not be the first time when Apple uses an existing idea/concept and improves it in order to integrate it in its devices – people have also noticed a striking similarity between iOS 5’s Notification Center and the MobileNotifier app.
Developers working on an app that could enable iPhone users to take panoramic photos should give up the idea since they are not going to become the next Peter Hajas.

iOS 5 Beta Tethered Jailbreak Tool Has Been Released

Apple’s Steve Jobs must indeed be really annoyed since the well-known iPhone-Dev Team has recently released a tethered iOS beta jailbreak tool. The solution has been developed by redsn0w and it became available just a couple of days after MuscleNerd, another iPhone-Dev Team member, tweeted to the world that the team had managed to jailbroke Apple’s iOS 5 developer beta version.
The team, however, has warned users that they should think twice before using this jailbreak tool on iOS 5 beta, since they could lose the unlockable baseband when trying to install iOS 5. Those who are eager to install unofficial apps on their devices and are willing to take the risk may go ahead and install redsn0w’s solution.
iOS 5 jailbreak
The jailbreak tool is compatible with CDMA and GSM iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2 and iPod Touch 3 and 4. The current solution has been developed for Mac users, but a jailbreak solution for Windows should be available as well in the future.
Users will also need to repeat the jailbreak process every time they reboot their iPhone, iPad or iPod, since this is only a tethered jailbreak tool.
“If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered”, the iPhone-Dev Team informed the unlockers.
iOS 5 is vulnerable to the limera1n exploit, which enabled the team to develop the jailbreak solution but since this is the iOS 5 beta version that we are talking about, it is possible that Apple secures its iOS against limera1n by the time the company launches the gold master iOS 5.

Two Small (But Awesome) Changes in iOS5

The amount of new features that Apple has introduced in iOS 5 is astounding. This is by far the largest and most impressive update to the iOS operating system. There are a lot of new features to dig through, and Steve and Co. covered the big one at Monday’s keynote. Let’s take a minute to look at two small, but interesting changes.
1. Switch the Switches
The first change, although superficial, is fun to look at. The oft-used toggle switches used to control settings in iOS have been redesigned. They’ve gone from the old square looking toggle to a rounded, more streamlined design.
old_toggles
new_toggles1
Although this is seemingly minor design change, it does make the OS feel much newer and more modern. This is also the first change to this particular UI element since the original iPhone launched in 2007. The subtle gloss highlight on the new style also makes things feel shinier and ads some depth.
As always with Apple, it’s all about the details.
2. Concurrent App Update Installs
The second change has to do with installing app updates. In iOS 4, app updates would install one at a time, each waiting their turn to download and install. For a long list of updates, this could often take a while. Now, with iOS 5, updates will install concurrently, up to three at once (much like iTunes downloads).
app_update
This means that a list of updates will install much more quickly on iOS 5 than in previous versions. Something else to look forward to!

iOS 5 Brings 1080p Video Content on iPad 2, iPhone 5 to Follow

The new iOS 5 represents an important step forward Apple has taken in terms of new features. The company has decided to integrate a wide array of improvements its operating system. Some of these features are not novelties since other rival operating systems have been offering them for some time now. But this is the first time Apple has made them available on its iOS.
The possibility to watch video content in the 1080p format is one of the new features brought by iOS 5. Some users have already managed to transfer 1080p films on their iPad 2 tablets and play the video content. Users who have tested the feature confirmed that films run seamlessly and added they noticed no lag. Of course, users need to convert films in the mp4 format accepted by Apple first, in order to transfer the video content on the iPad 2 via iTunes.
1080 p iPhone 5
The iPad 2 is unable to smoothly run unconverted 1080p films using video players purchased from the AppStore. However, unconverted films do run better on the iPad 2 than on the iPad. Apple will definitely use the new processing power of the A5 chipset and let users watch films in the 1080p video format. If we are lucky and the company decides to use the same A5 chip in the iPhone 5, we may be able to watch 1080p video content on the iPhone as well.
With all these rumors and expectations, we could easily become disappointed by iPhone 5 launch. Somebody wants an 8MP camera, others want an increased size while a bunch only desires for an uber-fast kernel. The pressure on iPhone 5 launch grows bigger as the Android army now has an imposing general: Samsung Galaxy SII. Even if Apple didn’t intend to make a giant leap with their iPhone 5, now they are simply obliged to do so. Unless they want to step off the technology pedestal.

3G Networks Could Support FaceTime in iOS 5

When it launched iOS 4, Apple explained that iPhone owners could not use the FaceTime feature via mobile phone network service. Users had only two options to activate FaceTime phone calls: via Wi-Fi connections or by installing various tweaks from Cydia that enabled them to use the FaceTime feature over 3G networks as well. Things are looking brighter now, since it appears that Apple is about to let its customers to make FaceTime calls over 3G.
A screenshot photo of an iPhone running iOS 5 has been posted on the Internet clearly showing that users are asked to activate the 3G network provided by the carrier to activate FaceTime. It is unlikely that the question be a mistake from Apple’s side.
face time 3G
iPhone owners will need the carriers’ permission to use the FaceTime feature over 3G. This means that carriers will have provided access to the VoIP networks for iPhone users to enable the feature. However, users can install tweaks on their smartphones and make FaceTime phone calls over 3G without the carriers’ permission. To put it differently, permission from carrier becomes a bit superfluous now.
Let us not forget that we are talking about the first beta version of iOS 5 and Apple could remove the feature by the time the company officially launches its gold master iOS 5 version. Nevertheless, 3G FaceTime phone calls represent a useful feature especially when users want to make FaceTime calls but no Wi-Fi network is available nearby.
Apple still has enough time to enhance iOS 5 until iPhone 5 launch. It is their chance to listen to customers’ complaints and to come up with a top-notch iPhone that could dissipate the doubts on Apple’s product.

Main Novelties Brought by iOS 5

Apple has revealed some of the new feature iOS 5 will bring with the help of iOS 5’s beta version. Let us take a glimpse at the main novelties:
  • Users can enable/disable iTunes synch via Wi-Fi
  • Safari can be set to open webpages in the background
  • iOS 5 lets users customize the OTA update system, namely they can check whether there are any updates available and even disable the update feature
  • Twitter has been given a special menu in Settings. The app installs itself as soon as users have logged in with their Apple account
  • The FaceTime button has been moved in the upper part of the Messages menu
  • Users can customize the notifications from the Notifications Center and choose how many notifications they want to see
  • iOS5
  • New sounds are available for incoming email notifications and users could also buy other sounds from the iTunes in the future
  • Users can shorten some of the expressions they frequently use and link the abbreviation to a shortcut on the keyboard. The iOS 5 brings a native abbreviation called omw which translates through „On My Way!”
  • Users can also print parts of the maps displayed in the Maps app
  • New albums can be created directly from the Photos app and users can delete or add photos to the existing albums
  • Email can be marked as „Read/Unread”
  • The Caller ID feature can be replaced by the phone number or the email address during FaceTime calls
  • The Weather apps displays weather info in real time depending on the area we are in
  • Users can finally erase single call from the call log
  • Camera Roll can be started from the Camera app with a simple swype to the left/right
  • Long links are no longer displayed in Safari’s bar, instead a Reading list button is shown
  • The buttons from iOS 5’s menus are slightly round and enclosed in round borders

WWDC 2011 Brings 200 New Features for iOS

WWDC has just ended and Apple has unveiled some of the tricks hidden in its bag. iOS 5 „is a major release” bringing 200 new features for the consumers to enjoy, Scott Forstall, Apple’s senior vice-president stated. The new OS will be available for consumers this autumn.
For example, a revamped „Notification Center” is available and notification will not stop active apps anymore. Deep Twitter integration means that iOS users will be able to send their tweets from built-in apps, Safari or YouTube. As for Safari, the browser has only one option for scrolling long articles now.
iOS5
iMessage will let users send messages from the iPad and iPod Touch over Wi-Fi or 3G for the first time. The app also offers support for chatting programs and let users know when their message has reached the addressee or when the other users are typing.
Over the air updates will also be available and a new digital newspaper center will let iOS users read the latest news based on a subscription while apps download and updates will take place in the background.
iOS users will also be able to launch the camera app right from the lock screen and press the volume button to shoot a photo. Photos can now be edited, cropped or rotated as well.
“We’re making it way faster to just get in and take photos,” Forstall stated.
The new split keyboard will let users thumb type much easier while the new mail features will bring improved enterprise options such as encrypted mail.
Apple’s senior vice-president reported that 200 million iOS products have been bought, out of which 25 million have been iPads. Users have bought 15 billion songs and 130 million books and downloaded 14 billion apps.

iPhone 3GS Owners Won’t Get iOS 5?

It’s still unconfirmed at this point, but Eldar Murtazin, editor-in-chief of Mobile-Review reported in a tweet that iOS 5 will not support the iPhone 3GS. *Mobile-Review* is a Russian mobile phone site. Murtazin has a respectable record when it comes to Apple news and tips.
ipod-mini
Although but nothing but speculation at this point, the timing does seem right. Apple has a history of discontinuing support for hardware older than about two years. The iPhone 3GS was released on June 19, 2009. This practice of ruthlessly ending upgrade support is often criticized but Apple’s willingness to kill off products (see: iPod Mini) allows them to innovate. Without the anchor that legacy products create, Apple is free to move in new directions quickly and take full advantage of newer and faster hardware.
We won’t know what new features will be in iOS 5 until WWDC 2011 (June 6 – 10), but it’s likely that there will be some cutting edge new things that require horsepower that the iPhone 3GS just can’t provide. Apple had performance trouble with iPhone 3G users that upgraded to iOS 4, so you can bet they will try to avoid similar problems with iOS 5. Even if Apple chose to allow iOS 5 to run on the 3GS, it’s likely that the performance would be sub-par.
iPhone 3GS owners, it’s time to start warming up your credit cards for September!

iPhone 5 To Use Dual Core A5 Processor

This doesn’t really surprise me, and we have had rumors in the past that the iPhone 5 will in fact include a new A5 processor. Yesterday with the release of iOS 4.3, it pretty much confirmed this news. Developers have uncovered evidence that the iPhone 5 will be powered by the same dual core processor found in the iPad 2.

Currently the iPhone 4 has a single core A4 processor and it’s standard for Apple to bump up the processor power every year. But it’s nice to have some pretty solid proof that they’re doing that.
So one thing’s for certain, the iPhone 5 will be blazingly fast, not as if it isn’t already…

iOS 4.2 Now Out – What’s New?

As I’m sure most of you know by now, iOS 4.2 is out now and available to download for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. iOS 4.2 is said to speed up the iPhone 3G as well,
All you have to do is plug your device into iTunes and hit update and you should be all set to go. While Apple are calling this iOS 4.2, your device will actually read iOS 4.2.1 for some unknown reason.
Here’s a quick look at what’s new in it:
Airplay
If you’ve got all your devices and new Apple TV running iOS 4.2 you can now take advantage of the new feature to stream audio and video content to your Apple TV
Find My iPhone
Before Apple charged you for the Find My iPhone service, but now it looks like it will be free to all users with iPhone’s, iPod Touch’s or iPads.
AirPrint
While this is fairly limited at the moment, it does work with HP printers, but at the moment you’re really just limited to them.
Safari “Find in Page”
You can now search for words and content within the safari browser
Multitasking For iPad
And this is the big one for most users, it finally brings multitasking to the iPad like on the other iOS devices

iOS 4.2 To Speed Up iPhone 3G Again?

The first iOS update to the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 were welcomed by all thanks to the new features. But the same couldn’t be said about iPhone 3G and iPod Touch users. Updating to iOS 4 had the opposite affect an update normally has. Instead of speeding up the devices, it slowed them down no end and the complaints came rolling in.
Thankfully Apple got to work and with iOS 4.1 they managed to speed things up again, but it’s still a little slow for comfort. However it’s looking like iOS 4.2 will be the iOS version that get’s your device back up to speed. According to TiPb who’ve tested the iOS 4.2 gold master on an iPhone 3G and they felt it was definitely quicker.

iOS 4.1 Glitch Allows Access To iPhone, Bypassing Passcode

A glitch has recently been discovered in iOS 4.1 which affects the iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G.
This glitch allows the user to access the handset’s call history, voicemail and address book, even if there’s a pass code on the phone.
To do this, users access the handsets dialer application and then dial a random emergency number from the “Emergency Call” burron. Then quickly press the lock button after dialing that call.

Engadget have a detailed explanation of it here
After pressing the hardware lock button, a user can then access the call history, voicemail and address book on the phone.
Users can also hold down the home button to access voice control and play music from the iPod application.
Selecting “share contact” and then choosing the camera icon also allows users to view the photo album on the iPhone without having properly unlocked the device with the passcode as well.
What’s more, this glitch also works in the early beta builds of iOS 4.2 as well, so there’s something for Apple to work on anyway.

iOS 4.2 Beta Now Released For iPhone, iPod & iPad

iOS 4.1 has only just landed, but Apple are already working hard on the next firmware version, iOS 4.2. Now while it wont really have that many major changes for the iPhone, it represents a big change for the iPad.

It’s the first time that the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, will all be running the same firmware with multitasking, folders etc….
Apple announced that iOS 4.2 would be making it’s way onto to iPad and such in November and releasing the first beta is a step in the right direction towards that date.
So far, the new features in iOS 4.2 are really just what Apple told us would be coming at their press conference. We’ve seen the multitasking on the iPad, but we’ve also seen the new Airplay system which allows you to play music over wireless , as well as wireless printing.

iOS 4.1 Jailbroken Already

Yesterday we were warned by the dev team not to update to iOS 4.1 as it prevents users from jailbreaking their devices. But alas, we don’t have to worry about that minor inconvenience any more.
iPhone hacker pod2g of Chronic Dev Team has found yet another exploit in the iPhones boot rom which allows you to jailbreak your device yet again. And since it’s in the bootrom, it also means that Apple wont be able to patch it with a simple firmware update, this one will require a hardware update to patch it up.
Now there’s no software option or method for us everyday users to jailbreak iOS 4.1 just yet, but they’re working on it as we speak and at least we know it’s possible

So if you updated in error, don’t worry, you will be able to jailbreak again soon enough. This also means that an unlock is also more than likely going to find it’s way out as well.
That didn’t take too long anyway!

iOS 4.1 Breaks Jailbreak/Unlock, Possibly Forever, Probably Not

As you know, iOS 4.1 will be coming out at some stage today, so when your iTunes prompts you to update just hold back for a second. According to the dev team, iOS 4.1 has a new baseband which breaks the current jailbreak and unlock, there’s no known way to get around it as yet
This means you many not be able to jailbreak/unlock your device ever again! Now the chances are the dev team and other hackers will work out away around this, but it could take weeks and months.

So you need to make the choice,
Do you want the Game Center, HDR Photos, Proximity Sensor and Bluetooth fixes? Or do you want to keep the freedom of being able to jailbreak/unlock your device?
I’ll leave that decision up to you

Apple Confirms iOS 4.1 Release Date For September 8th

Apple have gone ahead and confirmed with us that the iOS 4.1 software update for the iPhone will be coming out on September 8th, for UK customers at least.

The US website still says “Coming Soon” and hasn’t committed to a date as of yet, but I don’t see why Apple would do a staggered roll out of this. What this also means is Apple’s new line of iPods will also become available with the new firmware.
It’s hoped that iOS 4.1 will fix the proximity sensor issue, bluetooth troubles as well as speeding up the iPhone 3G, we’ll find out for sure on Wednesday anyway.

iOS4.1 To Fix Proximity Sensor Issue

Contrary to a rumor that appeared yesterday, it seems that iOS4.1 will be providing a fix for the proximity sensor issue that users are experiencing with the iPhone 4. Not only that, but it will also fix issues with Bluetooth and speed up performance on the iPhone 3G which has been very poor.
The new features? Well we have High Dynamic Range photos (allows you to take 3 images and combine them to form one rich one), HD Video Uploads over WiFi, TV show rentals and at last the Game Center.
The update is set to hit sometime next week and will be free for iPhone and iPod Touch users.

We also heard a bit about iOS 4.2 which will include support for printing and over the air streaming of music, it’s expected to be released in November

iOS Code Shows CDMA Verizon iPhones Being Tested Now?

Boy Genius Reports have been doing a little digging deep into the iOS 4 code to try and find some interesting information, and boy have they come up with the goods yet again.
According to this latest information they’ve uncovered, a new iPhone model and new iPad are getting ready to be field tested. The code they’ve found refers to new code names of iPhone3,2, iPhone3,3, and iProd2,1 and allows them to “auto-activate” which means they don’t have to be activated through iTunes. And if we look at the past every device has been set to “auto-activate” before it’s officially released and then the code is removed just before its release.
Way down deep within iOS 4 is a pretty intriguing block of code. Our source says that the code queries the device, and if the device is either a CDMA iPhone or iPad 2, the device will auto-activate, thus bypassing the need for iTunes. We’re told this block of code has appeared every year consecutively before a major iPhone / device release, removed right before launch.
Now the “iProd2,1″ is almost certainly the next generation iPad, however we’re a little confused as to why there’s 2 iPhone codes. The fact that there only iPhone3,2 and iPhone3,3 and not iPhone 4,x leads us to believe that there’s nothing major in the way of hardware and design, so this would lead us to believe it could be something simply, like a CDMA iPhone, compatible with Verizon.
The second iPhone model could be destined for a different carrier network for all we know.
In the past, iPhone codes like iPhone 3,1 appeared with the “auto-activate” attribute and then 6 months later it was released, that turned out to be the iPhone 4. So this would lead us to believe that the Verizon iPhone could launch roughly 6 months from now, so that would be early sometime next year.
No matter which way you look at it, evidence is increasingly mounting for a Verizon iPhone.

iOS 4.0.2 Prevents You From Jailbreaking Your Device

It seems like only the other day, the first official jailbreak method was released by the dev team, all you had to do was navigate to jailbreakme.com and it would jailbreak your device right from the browser. And of course Apple weren’t too happy with this, but it also showed up a big security flaw in the iOS software, which Apple have promptly fixed.

iOS 4.0.2 has just been released and this patches up that exploit, but it also prevents the dev teams browser jailbreak method from working. So you can have a choice, update your iPhone to 4.0.2 and protect it against possible malicious pdf exploits, or continue to have the ability to jailbreak your iPhone.
The choice is yours……….

Email Based FaceTime Support In iOS 4.1 Beta

The iOS 4.1 Beta 3 came out just a couple of days ago, and now we’ve had a chance to find out what’s new in it. In this latest edition of the iPhone firmware, Apple have added a new option in in “Contacts” which allows users to make FaceTime calls using a phone number or email address.
So this got us thinking, why would you need to ring an email address…..hmm maybe cause it was a device with a front facing camera which supported FaceTime, but it wasn’t a mobile. Why it must be the next gen iPod Touch! Or it could even be a future iPad!
So it looks like iOS 4.1 is getting ready to support a new iPod model with a front facing camera, we’re expecting to see a new iPod Touch introduced next month so this would be in line with the update

iOS 4.1 Beta 3 Is Released To Devs

Members of Apples iPhone developer program now have access to the most recent build of Apple’s iOS operating system. iOS 4.1 Beta 3 has now landed, only a week after iOS 4.1 Beta 2 did. So this could be a sure sign that a release date is near as Apple tends to accelerate its release cycle coming up to a public release.

What’s new in iOS 4.1 so far?
  • The Game Center
  • Flash/Camera buttons are repositioned in landscape
  • Favorites in iPhone app can be added as a voice or FaceTime
  • You can turn off spell check
Apart from this, not a whole lot that I know of to date, maybe this most recent build will have something extra in it?

iPhone iOS 4.1 Beta 2 Now Released

Apple has released the second beta edition of iOs 4.1 to developers yesterday. The first beta was released a couple of weeks ago and this was the first time that we saw some of the new features being introduced into the iPhone OS.
These new features include the Game Center that Steve Jobs introduced at the iOS press event, Flash/Camera buttons reposition themselves in landscape, favorites in the iPhone app can be added as a voice or facetime. You can now also turn off spell check in your settings.
Aside from these, there only seems to be some minor bug fixes coming along in this update as well.
We were told that  a future software update would address the proximity sensor issues that users are reporting, but as of yet there doesn’t seem to be any sign of this fix in the latest release.

iOS 4.0.1 Update Now Live – Fixes Display Problem

Apple have now released the iOS 4.0.1 firmware update which will fix the display issue with the iPhone 4 (it wasn’t displaying signal strength correctly)
The update is available for the iPhone 4, 3GS and 3G and you can download it right now. But beware iPhone 4 users, this won’t solve you antenna issues, it will just give you a more accurate description of how low your signal is.
Basically all this update does is change the signal display (before and after to be seen below courtesy of Engadget)

So just to remind you, it doesn’t affect your signal strength at all, it just makes it more accurate.

Apple Brings A Tear To Our Eye’s With FaceTime Commercials

Apple are really pushing this whole FaceTime feature in the iPhone 4, and have gone and released 4 new FaceTime commercials for the iPhone 4. These heart throbbing commercials will have you rushing down to your nearest Apple store, bumping into innocent bystanders as you struggle to see where you’re going between your teary eyes.
You burst through the doors of the Apple stores, with a tear streaked face and red eyes, with just one thing on your mind. – iPhone 4. You mercifully arrive at the sales desk and request an iPhone 4, only to find your eyes streaming again as you’re informed that there’s none in stock……
Ah well, why not look at those touching iPhone 4 FaceTime commercials again below to make you feel better?

Apple May Have To Skip iPhone OS 4.0 For The iPhone 4G

At Apple’s recent press event they announced iPhone OS 4.0 which brought some much needed feature to the iPhone operating system like multitasking, folders and iBooks. While Apple were almost certainly planning on launching the iPhone 4G running this new OS, they may well have to back pedal and revert back to iPhone OS 3.1.3
The US Federal Trade Commission isn’t to happy with some of the restrictions that come along in iPhone Os 4.0. Apple implemented a slight change for developers in its terms of service last month and this has sparked off the investigation.
The changes restricted developers from using cross-compiled runtime languages when developing apps for the iPhone. This in particular affected Adobe who had just only launched an iPhone apps development tool. I’m sure you’ve heard about the recent arguments Apple have had with Adobe over flash and that they’ve now withdrawen from making any apps for the iPhone.
According to a source within the US FTC who spoke with the New York Post, the group has internally discussed plans to possibly begin an antitrust inquiry into Apple’s recent changes.
OZCAR says:
If this truly does come to fruition, Apple may be forced to either modify the iPhone 4.0 OS to allow for cross-compiled runtime languages or launch the iPhone 4G with the previous OS (3.1.2). With only a little over a month from the official release of the iPhone 4G at the WWDC, we think Apple may need to go with the second option and later allow for an OTA update to OS 4.0 once it meets US Federal Trade Commission guidelines.
Now exactly how much of this is true is beyond me but I can certainly see why the Feds are interested in this as Apple is moving increasingly towards a major competitor in the mobile market and is forcing developers to make a hard choice about which platforms to target certainly puts the squeeze on competitors.
