Next Gen iPhone Won’t Support 4G Networks – Will Support Verizon

The ever more likely release of the iPhone on Verizon has sparked speculation as to whether or not the next gen iPhone will support Verizons and AT&T’s 4G networks. If we look at Apple’s past history it doesn’t look good, Apple decided to wait a whole product cycle before releasing the iPhone 3G which has support for the 3G networks, even though 3G data was widely available soon after the first iPhone release.
LTE is the new 4G network that’s making it’s way into the world at the moment with both Verizon and AT&T aiming to have it widely available in 2011. There’s two questions, will the mythical Verizon iPhone support 4G in January when it’s supposedly being released? And will the iPhone 5, which is due next summer, support the new 4G networks?
Well Techcrunch claim they have the answers. According to their sources the CDMA iPhone (Verizon iPhone) in January won’t support LTE. And the 5th generation iPhone due mid-2011 won’t support LTE either! Instead Apple are looking to produce a dual mode iPhone containing both flavours of 3G (CDMA and GSM) so it would work globally on pretty much any carrier.
Apple are probably reluctant to be one of the first out with 4G chips in their devices. Current 1st gen chips are rather bulky and power hungry and wouldn’t really fit in with Apples whole design. What’s more, while many carriers are well on their way with their 4G networks, in reality it will take a lot longer for it to become widely available.
So there you have it, there doesn’t seem to be any sign of 4G in the iPhone 5, maybe in the iPhone 6? But at least the iPhone 5 might have support for both Verizon and AT&T networks.
What do you think?
