The Wall Street Journal has come out with an article claiming that Apple is working on more than one iPhone at the moment. Apparently Apple is developing a new iPhone to debut this summer and also appears to be working on a model for U.S. mobile phone operator Verizon Wireless, according to their sources.
Apple need to make a CDMA compatible handset in order for it to be used on Verizons network in the US. Up to now Apple hasn’t had to do this since it had an exclusivity contract with AT&T which uses a different band. As we all know, this has given AT&T an edge over other carriers including Verizon for the last three years.
The people briefed on the matter said one of the new iPhones is being manufactured by Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry which has produced Apple’s previous iPhones. However The model that has CDMA capability, which seems destined for Verizon, is being manufactured by Pegatron Technology Corp., the contract manufacturing subsidiary of Taiwan’s ASUSTeK Computer Inc.
Another person “Familiar With The Matter” said that Pegatron isn’t scheduled to start mass production of these Verizon handsets until September 2010.
So it looks like Verizon may finally be getting a CDMA compatiable iPhone for their network, 4 years later,
What do you think?
