iPhone 5 To Sport Dual Core GPU

Rumors that Apple are prepping to move up to a new A5 chip earlier this week have now been followed up with news that the iPhone 5 will support a new graphics chip set, replacing the one that’s been around since the iPhone 3GS.
The chip is said to jump from the SGX535 to the new SGX543 graphics and video core, which can apparently offer about twice the processing power at the same clock speed. This new graphics core also supports OpenCL, which is used to offload general purpose computing tasks on the GPU for super speedy execution.
All in all it should make the next generation iPhone super quick! Not that the iPhone isn’t already…
A source familiar with Apple’s graphics strategy says the company will not only be upgrading its video core, but also going to multiple cores, a feature that is designed into the SGX543 design. The most likely configuration of Apple’s next custom chip is reportedly the SGX543MP2, which pairs two SGX543 cores to work as one, offering around four times the capability of the previous A4 in graphics and video tasks.


To give you an idea of how powerful this core is, Sony are considering putting it in the Playstation Portable 2, so it must be packing some punch!
