Now, one question remains unanswered: „Who is the supplier?” Two months ago, everybody would have answered Sony because the company’s CEO, Howard Stringer had stated Apple’s next-generation iPhone would use Sony’s 8MP sensor.
Apple has placed a huge camera sensor order, apparently for the iPhone 5 to OmniVision, its long- time camera image sensor supplier, DigiTimes reported. OmniVision will provide Apple with 90% of all the camera sensors the Cupertino giant needs for the manufacturing of the iPhone 5, while Sony will supply the 10% remainder, the same website informed.
It seems that Howard Stringer rushed to conclusions.
Apple’s choice to give up full supplies from OmniVision and add Sony’s products in the mix is a bit surprising. The CIS provider may not be able to meet Apple’s demand, some have suggested.
The 8MP camera is a nice present for all Apple’s customers, irrespective of the camera sensor supplier. It is high time that Apple brought a high-performance camera on its smartphones since many Android handsets already offer this feature. Nevertheless, it still remains a mystery why the Cupertino-based company has taken so long to improve its iPhone camera.
The release date for the iPhone 5 is still unknown. Some suggest the smartphone could be launched this fall, while others even claim there will be no trace of iPhone 5 on the market until 2012.
