Pegatron began its cooperation with Apple last year when the company expanded its manufacturing facilities so as to be able to produce 10 million CDMA iPhone 4 units in Q1 2011. Unfortunately for Pegatron, the success of the CDMA iPhone 4 was limited and the company shipped less than four million units. Due to this fact, the manufacturer’s utilization rate dropped to 50% and the gross margin plummeted to 1.8%, DigiTimes reports.
Pegatron has recently advertised for jobs, which made some people suspect that the company is preparing for the manufacturing of the iPhone 5. The manufacturer is trying to become a supplier for Apple’s iPad and MacBook as well but the other makers have so far succeeded in defending their orders. Apple may well be considering placing a small volume of iPad orders to Pegatron after all so as to decentralize production and avoid similar supply issues as those which occurred at Foxconn in May.
Pegatron’s business is not that good since the company has lost orders from Asus and is now desperately trying to court Acer for orders. Analysts are still optimistic and expect Pegatron to triple its notebook shipping volume from two million units to six million.
Pegatron has reportedly received orders for the first batch of PS4 gaming consoles from Sony, as well. The manufacturer has not issued any comments in regards to the purported iPhone 5 orders yet.
